On the 30th November 2019, a group of 40 adventure-seekers will be launching onto their ‘Fat-Bikes’ towards two memorable days of riding along the pristine beaches of the Southernmost tip of South Africa. This journey alongside like-minded people will not only be a break away from the daily grind, but it will be raising awareness and money for the VICTORIOUS Springbok’s chosen charity – the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.
Cape Town, South Africa, 6 November 2019 – Fat Bikes have been growing ever more popular over the last few years. They offer riders the opportunity to take on sandy and tough terrains which traditional mountain bike is less suited for, not to mention the ability to traverse iconic beaches and dunes.
Rugbytots South Africa
Rugbytots have linked up with the Fat-Attack beach ride company, Red Cherry Adventures, to create a two-day adventure which will bring likeminded people together, with a fundraising goal of R10K which will be donated to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. Rugbytots – the world’s favourite play rugby programme, operates fun dynamic rugby specific classes for boys and girls ages two to seven. It gives tots and parents the opportunity to learn the principles of rugby safely and playfully whilst making sporty friends. Since the establishment of the concept twelve years ago, there are 80 000 children enrolled in Rugbytots classes in 16 countries and on five continents around the world.
The Players’ Fund
The chosen charity of Rugbytots and in particular, this Fat-Attack beach ride, is the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. Known as Rugby’s Caring Hands, for the duty of care, it extends to rugby players in SA whose lives were changed on the field following serious head, neck and spine injuries. In the 39-year history of the organisation, support has been extended to over 500 players and their families, with 106 recipients currently cared for. Money raised by and for the Fund is used to ensure the best quality of life for the recipients all over the country as they face life with a “new normal”. The Players’ Fund is also honoured to be the official charity of the Springboks. “We believe that the essence of rugby is in the responsibility of being a part of a greater team and never forgetting those teammates whose lives were changed on the field.” says Steed Richardson, the Director of Rugbytots in SA and organiser of this fundraising adventure.
The Ride 4 Rugby’s Caring Hands
On 30th November the Rugbytots Fat-Attack beach ride will begin at the Arniston Hotel (200kms outside of Cape Town) where riders will meet their fat-wheel and beach-ready bikes. The team of 40 (max) will then ride along the beach before ducking inland to the De Mond Nature reserves where lunch will be served. After lunch, the last 20kms will take the riders through the sleepy town of Struisbaai and finally ending at the Cape Aghulas lighthouse which is a short hop away from the accommodation for the night. That evening promises to be an evening of fun and good banter between men and women alike, all fans of the beautiful game of rugby, with the Springbok victory promising to still be a hot topic of conversation. Following a refreshing dip in the ocean in the morning, the team will jump back on their bikes to weave their way back to the Arniston Hotel. Part of the unspoiled coastline this route covers is on the approval from Cape Nature, which is a box on the bucket list of any true nature lover.
In total, the ride will cover almost 80kms, with an extended loop of 15kms in the Overberg Cape Nature Reserve available for any racing snakes who might have a bit more fuel left in the tank.
