The Players’ Fund has teamed up with John Smit’s Barney’s Army to cycle the toughest mountain bike stage race in the world, the ABSA Cape Epic, on the 17 March 2023. Cycled over 8 days, covering 613km, and over 16 000 meters of vertical gain, the Cape Epic is the pinnacle of mountain biking endurance and determination.

The Barney’s Army x Players’ Fund team are trying to raise R613k to fund much needed new and replacement wheelchairs for our recipients. Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing the 5 Barney’s Arm x Players’ Fund teams and creating regular updates on our journey towards the ultimate mountain biking test. Players’ Fund CEO, Mark Kritzinger, will be riding his first Epic, with partner Coenie Louw, and the five teams are made up of:

  1. John Smit & Butch James
  2. Div Nel & Craig Collier
  3. Shane Chorley & Henry Bushney
  4. Mark Ward & Kenrick Brown
  5. Mark Kritzinger & Coenie Louw

Last year this time our very own Dr Phatho Zondi (Trustee) too – took on the champions challenge and successfully and in true class cycled the Cape Epic for a number of days successfully!

The Absa Cape Epic is a mountain bike stage race that takes place in the Western Cape of South Africa every year for 8 days from 17-24 March 2024. “Wild and open, sometimes inhospitable and other times staggeringly beautiful, this land both tests and surprises all who tackle its ungroomed trails. When the sounds of the cicadas are harsher than the heat they proclaim, when icy mornings lead to driving rain, you can be certain that both equipment and spirit will be pushed to the limit. In this place, where roads hardened year-round by the sun can turn to quicksand overnight, you and your partner will be challenged mentally, physically and emotionally”
